So the Vatican has lifted the excommunications of the bishops of the Society of St. Pius the Tenth.

Jewish web sites are filling with outraged comments.

And on traditionalist Catholic discussion sites (Angel Queen, Fish Eaters), antisemites are absolutely loving it.

The Jewish outrage I can understand. The SPPX overtly advocates restoring Jews to second-class status in their Kingship of Christ fantasy theocracies they hope to re-establish (basically, think Franco but without the warmer, fuzzier side). The SSPX's top English speaker, Bishop Williamson, has gone on the record to endorse the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, to accuse the you-know-whos of killing JFK, carrying out 9/11, and bringing about the economic crisis (before which he was accusing Jews of making mankind soft and materialistic though capitalist prosperity. Those damn Jews will get you coming and going..)

And well, I'm typing this in Boston, where the last time the local archdiocese was ruled by the pre-modernist traditionalists, it was an utter cesspool of corruption and racism.

But, but, as I understand it, lifting excommunication only means he can go to Mass. No priestly authority or anything. And going to Mass doesn't mean much without communion, which means being in a state of grace, which means going to confession, which means fessing up to all the crap he's pulled, including throwing calumnies, which is a violation of church cannon law.

So Williamson can't really take advantage of the lifting of his excommunication without admitting that what he's done was wrong. All he's gaining is the chance to admit it discreetly before being required to knock it off and resume being an obedient member of the church.

So why is there so much celebration over at Fish Eaters and the like??
