Um... Wow. (Spotted on BoingBoing, natch)

A few weeks back I wrote this entry, "Magical thinking and the green car" about why we will not be driving electric cars. And by "we" I mean myself and everyone who makes less money than me. And a good portion of those who make more.

Charlie Gibson disagrees:

If you can power a car with a battery for $3.60 a gallon, I'm going to set the price of oil so that gas is $3.50 a gallon," Gibson reasons. "It's just to keep us addicted, and that's not dumb. It's a piece of economic intelligence.

Well, there you have it, folks. The reason we don't have electric cars is because oil companies are working to make sure gas is just a little bit too cheap. Nothing to do with the difficulties of the fundamental limits of electrochemistry. He may not have done any math since 5th grade, but Gibson is a celebrity, so I must be wrong.

Magical thinking, spiced with conspiratorial thinking and scapegoating, and peddled on ABC News.

Gibson sowed the wind, and should keep in mind that he might be the one to reap the whirlwind. Scapegoating is not something you should cultivate when you have a high profile.
